Late Professor Hugh Davies legacy is unmatched: UPNG Academics

Professor Hugh Davies, highly regarded as the father of geology in Papua New Guinea passed away, over the weekend.
His valuable contribution in understanding the region’s geology, spanning from research, teaching, and mentorship will remain a lasting impact on the nation.
At 23 years of age, Prof Davies arrived in PNG for employment as a geologist with the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources, and contributed immensely in regional geological mapping, tectonic studies, and volcanic research.
The entire staff members of the Earth Sciences Division at the University of Papua New Guinea [UPNG], where the late professional dedicated much of his life to educating Papua New Guineans were in grief but celebrated his life achievements.
The Associate Professor of Earth Sciences or Geology Division Professor Joseph Espi shared highlights of his contribution.
"Prof Davies is a fatherly figure to many of us. He taught over 500 students from the Earth Sciences or Geology Division currently serving [working] in the industry globally, including PNG.
"His another significant contribution is the establishment of Disaster Risk Reduction Centre, the only Disaster Centre in the country.”
He added that professor Davis's research output was prolific, with over 100 academic papers on PNG’s geology.
Notably, he authored several books, including “Earth Tok” [2014].
Sharing the similar sediments were his former students, now lecturing at the University of Papua New Guinea's Earth Sciences Division.
Senior technical officer MacKenzie Baloiloi was emotional when sharing his experiences.
"I became better in what I do now because of this great man," Balioloi said.
A date will be confirmed by the university to conduct a memorial service to commemorate the life of the late professor.
