Commission warns teachers to resign before contesting elections

Teachers participating in the Local Level Government elections have been instructed to submit their resignation letters with clear notice dates before the issue of writs on June 27.
Teaching Service Commission chairman Samson Wangihomie issued this call urging teachers to cease their duties and vacate the school once their resignation have been approved.
With the LLG elections schedule for June and ten by-elections on foot, Wangihomie said teachers interested must start preparing to resign prior to contesting.
“A circular has been issued as a directive to teachers interested in contesting this election,” Wangihomie said.
“It is imperative or important for any member of the teaching service to participate in the LLG elections to adhere to section 124 of the teaching service act.
“That means, if you wish to take part in any of those two elections, you must apply to resign from the teachers’ service.”
Teachers who make up a big portion of the public service, interested to contest the elections have been reminded to submit their resignation letters addressed to the TSC chairman and copies delivered to the TSC provincial advisors including a copy to the schools they teach in.
Mr. Wangihomie said teachers who will be contesting the elections without properly resigning will face harsh consequences.
He called on communities to report teachers to the commission if they resort to such a situation.
“If they see a teacher who has not resigned contesting any of these elections, do let us know,” he said.
“The penalty is very severe if you do not resign and contest, you will be terminated from the teachers’ service.
“We have already terminated three teachers who have not tendered their resignation to contest the last national election.”
Wangihomie revealed that the commission has so far received three resignations from teachers contesting in two LLG elections and a by-election.
Meanwhile, he added that teachers must immediately write back to the commission two months after the return of writs on the 27th of September to be considered for reinstatement if they don’t succeed in the LLG and by-elections.
