Take responsibility and shape your future, says Morris

‎'Being independent means taking control of our destiny'; that was the message delivered to the people of Alotau, Milne Bay, during the 51st Independence celebrations on Wednesday.

‎Indigenous people of the province have been challenged to rise and take ownership of their land and resources, create local businesses and contribute in building the nation's economy, as foreign businesses continue to expand in the province.

‎For 51 years, Papua New Guinea has lived as an independent nation but as the country looks towards the future, questions remain about how much control the nation has over its own economic development, despite the abundant natural resources, land and tourism potential.

‎Speaking during the Independence celebrations in Alotau, local MP Ricky Morris challenged the people to take greater ownership of their resources, build and own local businesses and work collectively to contribute to the nation's development.

‎“Milne Bay is rich with blessings. We have fertile land suitable for growing cash crops, we have seas full of fish with islands that attract tourism and cultures admired throughout the world," he said.

‎"This is how we will lift our socio and economic strength of our electorate, province and our country. A future that is free from foreign influence, respect for each other and the laws of our land.

‎"Our freedom, our rights, and our vision guided by our unique constitution that many of us fall short to understand."

‎With foreign businesses continuing to expand in the province, Morris also appealed to the Milne Bay Provincial Government [MBPG] to make it easier for indigenous landowners to access and develop their land for business purposes.

‎He said creating simpler processes would allow more local people to establish businesses, participate in Small and Medium Enterprises, and benefit directly from economic opportunities created within the province.

‎Morris also called on the provincial government to consider legislation aimed at protecting and strengthening indigenous businesses as they compete with foreign-owned enterprises.
