The Santos PNG Orchids are locked in and ready for their opening 2026 Rugby League World Cup clash against France today bringing a wave of national anticipation into their campaign.

Despite the notably tight preparation window, Head Coach Craig Sandercock remains confident in his squad, noting that the players have adapted seamlessly to the demands of the tournament build-up.
"Training is going really well. The girls are really training hard and are picking up a lot of new things," Sandercock said.

For seasoned front-rower Elsie Albert, playing in front of passionate local supporters gives the Orchids a massive psychological and physical edge. Albert highlighted the advantage of competing in a familiar, warmer climate compared to their previous campaign in 2022, which heavily tested the squad's endurance.
"We are here early. We are getting used to the weather. So I feel sorry for our French counterparts that are coming to play us, but the advantage is on us," Albert said.

While Saturday's fixture presents a challenge, starting strong on home soil remains the team's ultimate goal. Albert has issued a call to the nation, urging fans to get behind them as they look to make a statement on the global stage.
"I'd say just come out and support. I think we need all the support we can get. The support we've been getting is overwhelming," Albert said.
"There's still going to be people out there who are going to be throwing shades and stuff, but you come on the field and you see us play, and then you can throw shades after."

Kickoff is set for today, Saturday 17th October, with the country watching to see if the Orchids can secure a crucial opening victory.
