Named at halfback to debut for the PNG Kumuls in this Saturday’s Rugby League World Cup opener against Lebanon is special for Bailey Biondi-Odo.

The Kumul call-up from coach Jason Demetriou allows the 24-year old Queensland born play-maker an opportunity to connect with his Papua New Guinea roots.

Biondi Odo’s Kumul eligibility comes through a distinctive link through his grandfather, originally from Hula, Central Province.

“My Nana (Alu) and grand dad were born in PNG, they are from Hula in Central Province. My grand dad was adopted into the Torres Straits when he was really little,” he said.

“I don't know much, but I’m talking to all the Central boys in camp to learn more about my culture.”

The New Zealand Warriors-bound player recently concluded an impressive season with the Townsville Blackhawks in the Queensland Cup competition making 17 appearances with 13 tries and 19 try assists.

He joins fellow team mate Dudley Dotoi who has been named for another PNG Kumuls appearance.

Biondi-Odo will be partnering with London Broncos five-eighth Gairo Voro in the halves with support from Leigh Leopards hooker Edwin Ipape and speedster Morea Morea at fullback, making the spine.

“Training has been really great, the boys are starting to ramp up. We’ve got a good side and I’m looking forward to our first match,” he added.

The PNG Kumuls will be led by veteran captain Rhyse Martin who makes his third Rugby League World Cup appearance starting with the Lebanon side this weekend.
