Veteran Lt Col. Kagena still laces up for the PNGDF Commanders Cup
Most service members hang up the boots after 24 years of playing active sports. But for Lieutenant Colonel Velmoore Kagena, disciplined physical management has been the ticket to taking the field for the Papua New Guinea Defence Force Commanders Cup.
As the 10th edition wrapped up on Monday the 5th of October 2026, it wasn't just the action drawing eyes—it was the focus on mental resilience. "The biggest one is mental resilience and toughness," Kagena said. "Comes with the job. We're used to working long hours and multiple tasks, and this tournament has brought everyone together to build that and keep working together as a team."
Kagena is no stranger to the turf. He was an original member of the 1RPIR Diggers squad that won the inaugural Commanders Cup in 2002 and 2003.
"I think I'm the last man standing with a few others from ATW and HQ Chiefs," he noted. "Some of the players here weren't born yet, and some of them I played with their fathers."
Proving he still has it, Kagena made his 9th appearance this year as the highest-ranking officer to physically play alongside his troops. With the LRRU Troopers, his leadership guides younger players through the elite military competition.
Beyond the scoreboard, the tournament aims to strengthen camaraderie and unite the force. Kagena points out that rank is checked at the sideline, creating an environment where personnel connect human-to-human. "In Rugby there is no rank on the field. Even though they try to pull rank, I just play the game" Kagena said.
Maintaining elite fitness after 24 years requires careful discipline— "It's been a good tournament," Kagena said. "I wouldn't say it would be my last. As long as my legs keep going, I can keep playing."
The LRRU Troopers ended their campaign as Shield runners-up, after succumbing to the Lombrum Sharks 17-26 on the final day of tournament.
