Bando calls for greater focus on weapons surrender

​Immigration Minister and Koroba-Kopiago MP William Bando has called for continued efforts to address illegal firearms as part of broader efforts to strengthen peace and security in Papua New Guinea.

Speaking last Friday in Tari during the official launch of the provincial ‘Make Hela Safe Again - Gun Surrender Program,’ Minister Bando addressed security challenges facing Hela Province and the broader nation.

He said the presence of illegal high-powered weapons remains a concern for communities seeking lasting stability and development.

Minister Bando also highlighted the importance of weapons surrender in supporting peace and stability in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

He said communities and leaders across the country have a role to play in addressing the circulation of illegal firearms.

Minister Bando commended Hela Governor Philip Undialu and the Hela Provincial Government for spearheading the provincial voluntary surrender initiative.

He also announced plans to work with people in the Koroba-Lake Kopiago District to establish similar surrender programs.

The comments come as voluntary firearm surrender initiatives continue in parts of the Highlands, with dozens of illegal firearms recently handed over to authorities in Hela.

The national gun surrender amnesty has also been extended to December 25, giving people holding illegal firearms additional time to surrender them.
