Adapt to change: Saroa

Prominent Port Moresby legal practitioner Nelson Saroa has called on Papua New Guineans to shift their mindsets as the nation steps beyond 51 years of independence and enters its next 50-year chapter.

Speaking during an independence anniversary message, the principal of Nelson Lawyers said PNG's future progress hinges on a fundamental shift in perspective across all levels of society.

"My overall message for the Independence was a reminder to our people that the 51 years represents a new era," Saroa said.

"It's the next 50, and a positive mindset, a more progressive and motivated perspective, is now necessary for Papua New Guineans to start moving forward."

Saroa emphasised that leadership responsibility must extend beyond political institutions into everyday community structures. He urged leaders across professional sectors, youth groups, sporting codes, and local government wards, districts, and provinces to actively cultivate positive change.

"It's important that all leaders in all levels of society have a shift in their minds and are positive in promoting and motivating the next generation of our leaders and our people," he said.

Without this positive mindset and growth, Saroa warned, the country risks underutilising its vast potential.

"Without that positive mindset, without that positive growth, we won't be able to harness the full potential and full benefits of what this country has to offer."

Highlighting the rapid pace of global and domestic developments, Saroa stressed that nation-building starts at the grassroots level, within households, schools, and local communities where young people are raised and mentored.

"The world is changing, and we have to embrace the changes that are coming," Saroa said.

"Our ability to embrace, adapt, and create opportunities that are now presenting before us is now more important than ever. We must be able to embrace change, and with that, a more positive approach to life in general."
