Bundaira prison receives food rations to compliment independence celebrations

As Papua New Guinea celebrates its 51st Independence, inmates at the Bundaira Correctional Institution in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands, will also mark the occasion and take time to reflect on their lives.

Eastern Highlands governor Simon Sia visited the prison to present food rations, complementing the inmates' celebrations and reminding them that they are not forgotten by society.

Governor Sia urged the prisoners to use the Independence period to reflect on their actions and focus on how they can better themselves for their families and the country.

Bundaira Correctional Institution commanding officer Laka Gaoma thanked Sia for the visit and the generous donation during the national celebrations.

Speaking on behalf of the inmates, prisoners' representative David Tony said they were humbled that the governor took time out of his busy schedule to visit them.

Tony added that while the rest of the country celebrates the 51st Independence in a grand fashion, the inmates will celebrate in their own small way and reflect on their personal rehabilitation.

The donation included bags of rice, cartons of tinned fish, noodles, soap, meat, and K1,000 in cash to support their long weekend festivities.
