Young Kapuls set sight on FIFA U-20 World Cup
Papua New Guinea’s U19 Men’s National Football Team will depart for Samoa on Thursday, August 27 to partake in the OFC Under 19 Championships scheduled for September 1st to the 14th.
The tournament in Samoa is crucial for the Junior Kapuls as they seek to qualify for the FIFA Under 20 Men's World Cup next year in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
The qualifying tournament in Samoa will see the winner, the runner up and the third-place nation qualify for the Under 20 World Cup.
With the two finalists and the third-place winner earning qualification to the global tournament to be hosted by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
For PNG’s young Kapuls, the tournament represents an important opportunity for a new generation of players to test themselves against the best young footballers in Oceania and potentially earn a place on the world stage.
PNG has been drawn in Group A alongside Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and hosts Samoa, while Group B features Fiji, Vanuatu, New Zealand and Tahiti.
The young Kapuls will begin their campaign against Solomon Islands on September 1st at 11:00am local time at the Samoa Football Headquarters Field 1.
They will then face hosts Samoa on September 4 at 3:00pm, before completing their group-stage campaign against New Caledonia on September 7 at 11:00am.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, putting PNG within three matches of a potential FIFA U-20 World Cup qualification place.
With only three qualification spots available from the tournament, every group-stage result will be crucial as the young Kapuls look to progress through the competition and keep their World Cup hopes alive.
Head Coach Mathew Witu will lead the PNG side, assisted by Valentine Nelson, with Godfrey Baniau serving as Goalkeeper Coach.
