Two-time Olympian John Ume and World Champ Sheilla Yama carry PNG flag to New Zealand

Papua New Guinea’s rise on the international boxing stage reaches a milestone this year, with two of the country's top fighters heading to Auckland, New Zealand, for title bouts.

Reigning IBF Welterweight Champion Sheilla Yama and two-time Olympian John Ume will both represent PNG in high-stakes bouts this weekend and over the coming months.

PNG Boxing Union president Dr Gideon Kendino has made a public appeal to corporate sponsors and government bodies to financially back both international campaigns.

First up, Yama puts her world title on the line this Saturday, August 8.

Yama's title defence will headline a fight card broadcast live across the country on NBC TV.

Following Yama’s bout, Ume will challenge for the Austral-Asian Light Welterweight (63kg) title on October 3.

Ume, a Pacific Games gold medallist, is currently in a specialized fight camp managed jointly by PNG-based coach Mark Keto and New South Wales-based coach Peter Morrison.

Dr Kendino said the dual-coaching setup would ensure Ume reaches peak physical conditioning for what marks the biggest fight of his professional career.

"John Ume and Sheilla Yama represent the absolute best of Papua New Guinea," a PNG Boxing Union statement said.

"They carry our flag onto the world stage through sheer grit, discipline, and skill. As John prepares for his October 3 title fight, we are calling on local businesses, corporate leaders, and fans across the nation to back him through fight-prep sponsorship."
