Water PNG announces emergency water rationing in Lorengau

Water PNG has announced emergency water rationing in Lorengau, Manus, following a significant decline in surface water levels caused by the prolonged dry season.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, the company stated that the surface water intake had fallen to critically low levels, resulting in insufficient raw water entering its treatment system.

According to Water PNG, the low water level is also causing the suction pit to draw air, forcing raw water transfer pumps to repeatedly switch on and off and disrupting normal water production.

The company advised that customers across Lorengau will experience intermittent water supply while the emergency water rationing remains in effect.

Water PNG confirmed that its technical team will conduct an urgent inspection of the water source to assess current conditions and identify both short-term and long-term solutions to improve water supply.

The utility is urging households, businesses, schools, health facilities and government departments to use water responsibly by storing enough for essential needs, prioritising drinking, cooking, sanitation and hygiene, and reporting any water leaks or illegal connections.

Water PNG added that the emergency water rationing will remain in place while assessments continue, with further updates to be provided as more information becomes available.
