Basketball federation elects new board at AGM

The Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea [BFPNG] has elected new board members during its 2026 Annual General Meeting [AGM] held at the Taurama Aquatic & Indoor Center over the weekend.

The meeting on Saturday, August 2, marked a key milestone in the sport's administration as the executive team reaffirmed its commitment to expanding and strengthening basketball development across the country.

Key outcomes of the election included the re-election of Simon Dixie as vice-president, alongside the election of Kathy Araea as general secretary and Naomie Lopes as an independent board member.

Araea succeeds outgoing general secretary Gosa Jack.

BFPNG President David Peter highlighted the federation’s ongoing progress in rebuilding stakeholder confidence through improved governance structures and recent international achievements.

Among these successes is Papua New Guinea’s historic qualification for 3x3 Basketball at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“The federation has made significant progress in rebuilding trust with our stakeholders while continuing to deliver results on and off the court,” Peter said.

Peter commended the service of outgoing GS Jack, thanking him for his administrative leadership and contribution to the growth of the game in PNG.

The BFPNG president outlined federation's strategic vision to enhance local competitions, coaching programs, officiating standards, regional affiliations, and grassroots player pathways.

He said the long-term objective remains positioning BFPNG as a leading national sporting body in the Oceania region.
