Oala shines as Mariners beat Black Bass

A stellar match-winning knock by Player of the Match Konio Oala guided Mariners Women to a comfortable six-wicket victory over Black Bass Women in the Boroko Motors ISUZU Women's 50-Over Tournament at Amini Park in Port Moresby today.

Winning the toss and choosing to field, Mariners set the tone early with a disciplined bowling display, skittling Black Bass for a low total of 65 runs in 23.3 overs.

Duna Alex starred with the ball, picking up 2-16 off three overs, while team captain Henao Jean Thomas matched her effort with 2-20. Pauke Siaka played an equally crucial role in containing the batters, conceding just nine runs from her four-over spell.

In reply, Mariners faced a brief scare early in their chase after losing quick wickets to drop to 13-4.

However, Oala steadied the ship, blasting an unbeaten 33 runs off 32 balls, including three boundaries and three maximums, to turn the game back in Mariners' favor.

She was supported by Brenda Elly [9 not out], who held firm at the other end as the pair shared an unbroken stand to overhaul the target, reaching 66-4 in 14 overs.

Despite a fighting effort from Black Bass skipper Thomas, who bagged two wickets with the ball, Mariners' middle order held their composure to claim the win.

The match wrapped up Round One of the three-team domestic competition involving Black Bass, Mariners, and Cassowaries.

Organised by Cricket PNG, the tournament serves as vital match preparation for national players eyeing future international fixtures with the Lewas squad.
