Oa clocks personal best in Commonwealth Games
Team Papua New Guinea athletes continued their campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Monday, securing personal bests and vital international experience across five sporting cdoes.
Hurdler Robert Oa provided one of the day’s highlights at Scotstoun Stadium, setting a personal best time of 14.39 seconds in the Men’s 110m Hurdles to place 10th overall.
In the sprint events, PNG athletes contended with cold temperatures and strong track winds. Pais Wisil recorded 10.58 seconds in the Men’s 100m heats, while Isila Apkup led the PNG women’s contingent with a 12.01-second mark. Scholastica Herman clocked 2:19.20 in the Women’s 800m heats.
The track team returns to Scotstoun today for the Men’s 800m heats.
At the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Roxanne Kirarock shaved nearly a full second off her career mark, stopping the clock at 36.98 seconds in the Women’s 50m Breaststroke. She is scheduled to compete in the 200m Breaststroke on Wednesday.
In the Men’s 100m Freestyle, Josh Tarere finished in 54.25 seconds - just 0.44 seconds off the personal best he established in the Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay. Teammate Thomas Chen posted 55.83 seconds.
In the Women’s 50m Backstroke, Jhnayali Tokome-Garap clocked 31.65 seconds, while Joanna Chen recorded 33.78 seconds, both narrowly missing their personal best marks. Today marks the final pool appearance for Tokome-Garap, Joanna Chen, Thomas Chen, and Tarere.
In boxing, Kua Gunua Mua put up a spirited display in the Men’s 80kg Round of 16 at the Scottish Event Campus [Hall 5], but fell to Wales’ Daniel Pitt by unanimous decision [5-0]. Focus now turns to Flora Loga, who meets host nation fighter Caitlyn Rainey of Scotland in Tuesday's Women’s 65kg Quarter Final.
Meanwhile, Team PNG’s Women’s 3x3 Basketball campaign drew to a close at SEC Hall 4 following preliminary losses to England [21-4] and Scotland [21-5].
In weightlifting, multi-time champion Dika Toua recorded no total in the Women’s 53kg division at the SEC Armadillo, marking the conclusion of PNG’s weightlifting campaign at the Games.
