Students from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville [AROB] who are studying in Madang gathered on Saturday to celebrate Bougainville Day, marking the establishment of the Autonomous Bougainville Government [ABG].

The celebration, hosted by students from Divine Word University [DWU], Madang Teachers College, and Madang Technical College, was held at the SVDMA Hall at DWU.

Although Bougainville Day is officially celebrated on June 15 each year, this year's event was moved to June 20 due to student examinations.

The day began with a morning walk from the DWU campus to Kalibobo before participants returned to campus for cultural performances, speeches, and fellowship.

President of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville and Solomon Islands Students Association at DWU, Prunella Semoso, said Bougainville Day symbolizes the rebirth of the Bougainville people following years of conflict and hardship.

"Bougainville Day is a celebration of our rebirth as a people and a reminder of the sacrifices made to secure our future," Ms. Semoso said.

She said the day celebrates Bougainville's unique right to self-determination, honors the sacrifices of those who struggled during difficult times, promotes reconciliation, and reflects the hopes and aspirations of Bougainvilleans.

Ms. Semoso said, "Organizing the event came with challenges, particularly balancing preparations with examination commitments and coordinating students from different institutions."

Despite the difficulties, she acknowledged the support of DWU Matron Gail Sarei Saun, AROB staff from DWU, Madang Technical College, Madang Teachers College, and the wider Bougainville community in Madang.

Speaking on the role of young people in Bougainville's future, Ms. Semoso encouraged students to remain focused on education and community development.

"We are the ones who will live in this new nation. Building our future is not just a job for the government; it is a job for us," she said.

She urged youths to stay in school, respect their elders, and maintain peace within their communities.

"We build the future when we stay in school, respect our elders, and keep peace in our communities," she added.

She also highlighted the importance of unity amongst Bougainvilleans.

"Unity is our greatest power. When we stand together, we can achieve the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of our people," she emphasised.

Ms. Semoso said celebrating Bougainville Day away from home was a proud moment for many students.

"Being a Bougainvillean and celebrating my identity in another province is a different kind of feeling, and it makes me proud of where I come from," she said.

The event brought together students, community members, and supporters to celebrate Bougainville's heritage, identity, and shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous future.
