Former sprint champion spearheads Morata road upgrade project
Residents of Morata 3 in the Port Moresby North-West electorate are set to benefit from a community infrastructure service following the launch of a road maintenance and upgrade project along Nikints Street.
The initiative is spearheaded by former Pacific sprint champion and decorated Papua New Guinean athlete Nelson Stone, who partnered with local contractor HN Plant Hire Services to deliver the vital works.
Stone approached HN Plant Hire Services to secure the heavy machinery and technical expertise required for the project, in response to the deteriorating state of local infrastructure and the urgent need for safer, more accessible roads.
According to a statement from HN Plant Hire Services, the comprehensive scope of works includes road grading and reshaping, drainage clearing, pothole repairs, vegetation removal, and general surface maintenance to enhance overall road safety and accessibility.
HN Plant Hire Services commended the former sprinter for translating his leadership from the athletic track into tangible community development.
"Beyond his achievements on the track, Nelson continues to demonstrate his commitment to community development by taking practical steps to improve the lives of ordinary Papua New Guineans," the company said.
The project has garnered widespread praise as a prime example of community-led intervention, with support from local leaders and Morata residents.
Stone expressed his gratitude to all neighborhood stakeholders for their cooperation, stating that the partnership serves as a model for utilizing civic action to improve living conditions and build stronger local communities.
