PNG crush Cook Islands to secure U19 championship berth
Papua New Guinea has qualified for the OFC Under-19 Men’s Championship 2026 in Samoa after a commanding 5-1 victory over the Cook Islands in Rarotonga, securing the top spot in the regional qualifying tournament.
Mathew Witu’s side entered the decisive final fixture needing only a draw to progress. However, facing a host nation that required a victory to keep their own qualification hopes alive, Papua New Guinea produced an authoritative performance to eliminate any margin for error.
The visitors established control early, striking twice within the opening 20 minutes to disrupt the hosts’ game plan. Ruel Api opened the scoring, seizing on a loose ball outside the penalty area and converting from distance to hand Papua New Guinea an early lead.
The breakthrough allowed PNG to dictate the tempo, controlling possession and creating sustained pressure through captain Nalau Moses, Benjamin Kila, and forward David Tita.
The tactical dominance materialized into a second goal when Bomecge Basananuc delivered a precise long-range pass to Tita. The forward advanced toward the penalty area before executing a low cross to Moses, who finished clinically to double the advantage.
The Cook Islands responded with late first-half pressure, primarily utilizing set-pieces. Maui Denny’s free-kick found Kima Webb, whose header cleared the crossbar, while subsequent long-range efforts from Denny and Josh Barrymore-Udan tested the PNG defense but failed to alter the scoreline before the interval.
Papua New Guinea extended their lead immediately after the restart. Basananuc recorded his second assist of the match, releasing Tita upfield. The forward converted the opportunity to register his fourth goal of the qualifying campaign.
The Cook Islands capitalised on their aerial strength shortly after. Charlie Noovao-Martin met a curling delivery from a Denny set-piece, heading past the PNG goalkeeper to reduce the deficit.
As the hosts pushed forward in search of further goals, Papua New Guinea exploited the resulting defensive vulnerabilities, scoring twice in the closing stages to secure the result.
John Millis breached the Cook Islands defense with a run into the penalty area, setting up substitute Benjamin Sumabru for a close-range finish in the 85th minute mark.
Four minutes after Sumabru turned provider, delivering a pass to Jaru Eron, who struck home to complete the scoring.
The victory ensures Papua New Guinea’s progression to the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship 2026 in Samoa. The team enters Group B, where they will face New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, and the host nation.
The defeat concludes the qualifying campaign for the Cook Islands, who finish second in the qualification standings.
