The SP PNG Hunters' defensive line cracked under pressure as a clinical Burleigh Bears outfit capitalised on critical communication breakdowns to claim a 22-12 victory in Hostplus Cup round 13 clash.

Despite an aggressive start by the home side that saw them register early points, the Hunters struggled to maintain defensive consistency. Missteps and lapses in communication ultimately allowed the Bears to dictate the tempo of the match.

The Hunters opened the contest exactly as planned, utilizing sustained pressure in the opening minutes to force an error from the Bears' defense and hooker Trevor Solu cross the line for the first points of the match.

However, the lead was short-lived. Burleigh struck back quickly when Lachlan Sheldon took advantage of a defensive slip by Hunters backline, slicing through a one-on-one gap to score.

The Bears began finding continuous rhythm out of dummy half, testing the fringes of the Hunters' line. A sharp offensive set saw Lee Turner Raal cross for his 40th career try, shifting the momentum entirely to the visitors.

The Hunters' defensive frustrations peaked towards the end of the first half. A dummy pass from the Burleigh halfback completely unraveled the Hunters' right-edge defense, leaving Joel Gena isolated as Callum Grock walked over virtually untouched to secure the Bears' third try of the half.

A stark lack of inside communication between backline players and the cover defenders as the main catalyst for the gaps.

The Hunters showed a brief spark of brilliance when defenders made a bone-rattling tackle on a Burleigh runner. The massive hit forced a loose ball, which Joel Gena scooped up to score, diving over the line to cut the deficit before the break.

Any hopes of a second-half resurgence from the home crowd were dampened early when Burleigh's Jordan tore through a staggered, retreating defensive line to score.

The Hunters' captain attempted to lead by example, pulling off a brilliant "grass-cutter" tackle on last play to shut down a threatening Burleigh raid. Yet, the execution from the visitors proved too relentless.

The final blow came from a precise cross-field bomb by Guy Hamilton. Burleigh's towering center, Kane Brley, out-lept Bruce Bawase in AFL-style in the corner to reel in the ball and seal the match.

Ultimately, the Bears' dominance across the full 80 minutes proved too much for the Hunters to overcome, closing out the contest at 22-12.
