Power rollout to extend to Oleya community
Rural Electrification Project in the Mendi Munihu District of Southern Highlands Province will be extended to Oleya community after reaching Wambip and Tulum communities.
Scoops Electrical Service crews are on standby to install transformers, connect households, and set up streetlights for public places, churches, and schools.
The project is jointly funded by the Mendi Munihu District Development Authority (MMDDA), Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL), and the Southern Highlands Provincial Government (SHPG).
Local MP Raphael Tonpi thanked KPHL and SHPG for their support and said MMDDA will continue to fund the rollout. “Access to electricity will transform people’s lives,” he said.
Mr. Tonpi said families have long suffered health problems from smoke in kunai thatched-roof houses. “People had been living in traditional homes for many years and have been sick after battling with smoke. Kunai grass used for building is slowly dying out while bushes are being cleared, and people will face challenges constructing their houses.”
He urged his people to build decent, permanent homes and said electricity will drive SME growth through trade stores, poultry, piggery, and other ventures.
The MP acknowledged community leaders Dixie Pombe, George Kowi, and ward councilors for Wambip 1, Tulum 1 and 2. He commended Scoops Electrical Services, which also delivered the Mendi–Nipa via Lai Valley connection. “We will slowly connect every village in Mendi to help improve the lives of the people.
Under a separate Japan International Cooperation System (JICS) program, MMDDA has connected 500 homes at a cost of K1 million," Mr. Tonpi said.
He also commended PNG Power Ltd for partnering with the private sector on rural electrification.
The project is expected to be officially launched next week.
