Barramundis depart for Japan
The PNG Barramundis have officially departed Papua New Guinea on Tuesday for Japan, where they will compete in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific [EAP] Qualifier from 8–18 May 2026.
Speaking on behalf of the Cricket PNG Board, Chairman Michael Harrison extended his best wishes to the team, encouraging them to represent the country with pride and deliver their best performances on the international stage.
Head Coach Tim McCaskill confirmed the team’s departure, describing the moment as a significant milestone in their campaign.
“The PNG Barramundis have departed for Japan for the ICC Men’s World Cup EAP Qualifier.
"The journey has finally come together, and the level of excitement within the team is very high,” McCaskill said.
The squad heads into the tournament with confidence following strong performances at the recent 2026 National Indigenous Cricket Championships [NICC] in Mackay, Australia.
The selected team has a blend of experienced players and emerging talent, highlighting the growing depth within the national program.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup EAP Qualifier in Japan forms the official pathway to the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The 14-man squad includes captain Assadollah Vala, with the return of experienced batter Tony Ura adding strength to the lineup. New inclusions Debutants Ryan Ani and Aue Oru have earned their first national call-ups following standout performances in the Boroko Motors Isuzu T20 Smash, while 18-year-old Gaba Frank is regarded as one of the program’s exciting young prospects.
