In a landmark moment for Papua New Guinea and Australia’s enduring partnership, Colonel Boniface Aruma of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force proudly led the Australian Army’s 3rd Brigade during the Anzac Day last Saturday, 25 April.

As Deputy Commander of the 3rd Brigade, Colonel Aruma is the first PNGDF officer to rise to such a senior command position within the Australian Army.

In a statement issued by the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby, the Department of Foreign Affairs praised Colonel Aruma’s leadership qualities and reaffirmed the strength of the bilateral defence relationship.

His leadership on this significant day reflects both his personal achievement and the depth of defence ties between Papua New Guinea and Australia.

The Anzac legacy, reshaped in Papua New Guinea during World War II, remains a cornerstone of the bond between the two nations.

Today, that spirit is carried forward through shared service, sacrifice, and responsibility for peace and security in the region.

Australia and Papua New Guinea continue to walk side by side marching step by step together as partners bound by history, community, and a commitment to safeguarding the future.
