Eight people have been killed in a landslide in inland Central Bougainville, following devastating heavy rains from Tropical Cyclone Maila.

The incident happened at Asiko Village in Kongara Constituency Central Bougainville.

The deceased includes a family and other people.

Reports received by NBC News say the tragedy struck early Thursday [April 9] evening.

A couple, their son and grandchild, along with others were killed in the landslide.

Their bodies have been recovered and will be given proper burials today [Sunday, April 12].

Twelve other people, including a pregnant mother, are being hospitalized for injuries at the local Kakusida Health Centre.

Roads in the constituency have also been cut off as a result of flooding, and food gardens reportedly damaged as well.

The Bougainville Copper Limited has responded to the tragedy, delivering food supplies and other items to families of the deceased.
