Sir Michael vigil and memorial
A candlelight vigil in honor of the country’s founding father, the Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, will be held this evening in the nation’s capital.
A public holiday is commemorated every 26th February annually to commemorate the day of Sir Michael’s passing and reflect on his leadership in bringing the country towards Independence.
Hosted by the municipal authority, a memorial walk honoring all past leaders will start at 5pm at the Paga Hill ring road, ending with a candlelight vigil for Sir Michael at the Sir Hubert Murray stadium.
Tribute videos are expected, with a minute of silence after Governor Parkop addresses those gathered, followed by a tribute by a member of the Somare family and Prime Minister James Marape.
It's been five years since the passing of the country’s forefathers, a death which shook the nation and saw thousands in mourning.
