Three final-year students from the Papua New Guinea University of Technology [Unitech] have begun industrial training on the Lae Main Market Redevelopment project, giving them valuable hands on experience on a major construction site.

The students, who are studying architecture and construction management, will complete 450 hours of structured on the job training as part of their degree requirements.

The training is supported by Australia and aims to help build PNG’s skilled workforce and prepare young professionals to lead future infrastructure projects.

During their placement, the students will learn about site management, construction methods, workplace safety, quality control, and how to handle real project challenges.

Trainee Renee Tibong described the opportunity as exciting.

“I truly believe this came at the right time. Working alongside experienced supervisors has helped me grow and gain confidence,” she said.

Another trainee, Lavina Cliff, said being part of such an important project has motivated her.

“Being involved in the Lae Market project inspires me to give my best. It’s a chance to apply what we’ve learned in the classroom,” she said.

The program also supports gender equality and social inclusion. Trainee Delencia Bibiken said she feels supported as a female trainee.

“I feel confident that the project is looking after both people and the community,” she said.

This is the first group of students to be placed on the project, with more Unitech students expected to join throughout the life of the redevelopment.

The Lae Market Redevelopment is creating strong local employment, with more than 90 per cent of the 200 workers on site coming from the local community.

The project will also support 18 trade trainees, six Unitech student placements, and 10 internships for unemployed youth.

The redevelopment is led by Australia in partnership with New Zealand and the Lae City Authority and aims to deliver a high-quality, climate-resilient market for the people of Lae.
