Hela endorses K686 million for 2026 development
The Hela Provincial Assembly has approved a budget of K686 million, marking a strong start to the year with its first assembly meeting held earlier this week.
The budget, drawn from internal revenue, administration grants, and substantial carryover funds, sets the stage for ambitious development projects across the province.
Governor and Assembly Chairman Philip Undialu highlighted the unique financial position of Hela, stating that while many provinces struggle to roll over funds from one year to the next, Hela enters 2026 with a significant K322 million in carryover funds.
“Many provinces do not leave such money for the next year’s operations, but we are lucky. The K300 million plus is projected revenue, meaning allocations may not be fully realized as stated. However, with K322 million already available, we are in a strong position to kick off work immediately,” Governor Undialu said.
The main sectors received a substantial amount of funding allocation, the Road and Bridge Infrastructure received K120 million, Education K54 million, Law and Justice section K52 million, and Health K37 million.
The session opened with formal acknowledgments and a warm welcome to all Local Level Government (LLG) presidents, both newly elected and returning, following the conclusion of the 2025 LLG elections.
Leadership matters were quickly addressed with the re-election of Charles Aluya, Komo LLG President, as Deputy Governor. Mr. Aluya was returned to the office unopposed.
In his remarks, Mr. Aluya expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to continue serving diligently in his second term.
Komo Hulia MP Daniel Tindipu also commended the assembly for reaffirming its trust in Mr. Aluya. He extended his welcome to all LLG presidents.
Governor Undialu stated that the approved funding is expected to drive infrastructure upgrades, improve service delivery, and strengthen law and order across the province.
"The passage of this budget signals a year of opportunity and growth, with Hela positioning itself as one of the few provinces entering 2026 with both strong financial reserves and a clear development roadmap."
