Western Highlands Governor Wai Rapa has called for collective leadership among Highland's governors to address the growing problem of gun-related crimes in the region.

Governor Rapa said illegal firearms continue to fuel violence and tribal conflicts across the Highlands.

Speaking at a press conference in Mt Hagen on Tuesday, Governor Rapa welcomed Prime Minister James Marape’s recent call for Highland's governors to work together to tackle gun trafficking and law and order issues.

The Prime Minister, in a press statement, said the initiative aims to restore peace and improve security in affected communities.

Governor Rapa described the move as timely and important for the region, particularly following a recent Post-Courier report on plans by Highland's governors to discuss firearms issues.

“I welcome the news that Prime Minister James Marape has made,” Governor Rapa said.

“I have always emphasized collaboration between us leaders, especially in the Upper Highlands, to work together to combat law and order issues, and now this call by Mr Marape is encouraging.”

Prime Minister Marape has confirmed that governors from Enga, Hela, Southern Highlands and Western Highlands will meet with Police Minister Sir John Pundari to discuss gun trafficking networks and coordinate a regional response.

Governor Rapa said he is ready for the meeting and has called on relevant authorities to organise the discussions as soon as possible.

“The meeting must be called as soon as possible because law and order issues, especially tribal conflicts involving high-powered guns, are getting out of hand in this part of the region,” he said.

He added that addressing gun violence in the Highlands is not only important for the region, but for the entire country.
