Bypass created at Yanamu for ease of vehicle movement
The Department of Works and Highways has created a bypass across the Yanamu river to help ease the movement of vehicles, following the collapse of the bridge early Wednesday morning.
For the Aumea bridge, vehicles are using the wet crossing.
Provincial Works Manager for Madang, John Pora confirmed vehicles have begun using the bypass as of yesterday.
Commuters were left stranded and unable to cross the river on Wednesday and Thursday due to heavy flooding.
Pora has also revealed that engineers will get to work immediately to replace the distressed bridges.
He said; "The Aumea bridge will take about three months to build whilst Yanamu will take at least a month."
People travelling the highway have been charged fees over the past two days to cross the two rivers with the assistance of local carriers.
Mobile Squad 13 from Lae have been engaged at the sites since Wednesday to ensure commuters' safety.
Drivers are advised to exercise caution and be on the lookout for any possible road hazards at this time.
