A notorious settlement in Wewak, known as Masandanai Camp, was set ablaze today after PNG Defence Force soldiers from 2RPIR at Moem Barracks moved in to dismantle the area, which authorities say had become a haven for criminal activity.

The eviction exercise followed an incident in which a Papua New Guinea Defence Force [PNGDF] soldier was shot and seriously wounded by one of the youths from the settlement using a wire catapult.

Provincial Police Commander Christopher Tamari confirmed that police have since apprehended the culprit.

Following the attack, PNGDF soldiers moved in and set fire to the settlement.

Masandanai Camp has long been associated with serious crimes, including murder, rape, and armed robbery.

The settlement has also posed a persistent threat to public services, with staff and vehicles from the East Sepik Provincial Hospital frequently targeted by drunk youths.

Reports indicate that hospital vehicles traveling to and from the hospital were frequently stopped and damaged by criminal elements operating from the camp.

Despite reports of some residents surrendering, the eviction exercise proceeded as planned.
PPC Tamari emphasized that the operation was necessary to restore peace and protect the community from further harm despite numerous warnings.

Authorities say the dismantling of Masandanai Camp is part of broader efforts to address rising crime in Wewak and to ensure the safety of essential services and the public.
