The National Government paid around K80 million last year to Water PNG to settle some of its outstanding bills.

This comes as Port Moresby continues to experience water disruptions. Reports show that Water PNG is still owed over K300 million, mostly by state agencies.

According to Prime Minister James Marape, this debt is one of the main reasons for unreliable water services in the capital, alongside old and aging infrastructure.

He told NBC that the government is aware of the issue and has spent about K80 million so far.

Mr Marape has called for a meeting with Kumul Consolidated Holdings Limited and Water PNG next week on the current water situation.

Going forward, Water PNG aims to stabilise its existing systems as well as rebuild them for the long term, reliable water supply in Port Moresby.
