Sir Puka warns PNG families are under growing pressure
Veteran statesman Sir Puka Temu says Papua New Guinea is entering the new year under serious pressure, with many families struggling to cope with high living costs, rising crime and limited job opportunities.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Sir Puka said ordinary Papua New Guineans are finding life increasingly difficult and are relying more on family and community support to survive, often where government services are lacking.
He stressed that strong families remain the backbone of the nation, helping to build responsible citizens and safer communities, especially at a time when many institutions are under strain.
However, Sir Puka warned that family strength alone is not enough, saying lawlessness, a weak health system, falling education standards and lack of jobs have become national emergencies.
He called on the government to refocus on law and order, health, education, agriculture and manufacturing, saying these areas are key to improving lives and creating jobs.
Sir Puka said Prime Minister James Marape’s political stability until 2027 presents a rare chance for decisive leadership, adding that people want real results, not empty talk.
He urged leaders to act with honesty and courage and encouraged citizens to remain united as the country moves into the new year.
