National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab has confirmed that nine people, four women and five men, were arrested and charged for unlawfully being on National Housing Commission [NHC] premises, loitering, and gambling.

He said the arrests followed a quick police response after officers were alerted through the police radio. The suspects have since been charged under the Summary Offences Act and are currently being held in police custody.

Met Supt Simatab said the Five Mile NHC units are home to tenants and stressed that people must respect those living there. He added that police will continue patrols and respond to complaints from residents who do not want their peace disturbed.

He said that such mass arrests by police will now send out a message to others to avoid getting caught by the police.

"I want to commend my police officers who have been hard at work. They have been responding to calls from the Community Watch volunteers and members of the public, making sure that the festive season is celebrated peacefully.

"We are doing our best to ensure everyone enjoys the service. Alcohol-related offenses are still on the rise, according to our reports from police communication channels. When people consume liquor, they cause noise pollution, disturbing the peace of others and causing fights that can lead to death. All we ask from the public is to celebrate responsibly," Met Supt Simatab said.

Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab also thanked other police units across the city for making arrests within their areas of operation.

He said police will be out in full force tonight to make sure everyone can enjoy their celebrations peacefully and without disruption.

Superintendent Simatab also acknowledged the efforts of community watch volunteers, thanking them for the important work they continue to do in keeping their communities safe.
