New cocoa depot brings economic hope to Aitape
Wilyete Cocoa Exporter in Vanimo has recently established a new cocoa depot in Aitape, following the “Look West Policy,” an initiative by cocoa farmers from Suain village in Aitape East LLG, West Sepik Province.
The initiative focuses on bringing services closer to farmers while contributing to revenue growth in the province.
Junior Mani, the officer in charge of Wilyete Cocoa Exporter, said that for the people of Aitape, from the east coast to the west coast and inland, the establishment of the depot was a Christmas gift.
Mani noted that there is less cash flow in Aitape and that the prices of goods and services are very high due to limited economic activities.
He said that with the establishment of the cocoa depot, economic activities in the district can be boosted and cash flow increased.
Mani said that within 14 days of operation, from December 11 to 24, the depot received 18 tonnes of dry cocoa beans.
He further stated that Aitape has strong potential for cocoa production and urged district leaders to assist in fixing roads so that farmers from other villages can access the cocoa depot.
Meanwhile, Mani encouraged cocoa farmers in Aitape-Lumi and other districts to open bank accounts so payments can be made directly into their accounts, instead of handling cash, to avoid unnecessary spending and the risk of hold-ups.
