Mothers bring Christmas joy to Angau children’s ward
A group of three mothers in Lae has brightened the festive season for children at the Angau Memorial General Hospital pediatric ward, donating gifts and goody bags to lift the spirits of young patients.
The initiative, carried out on Tuesday, began after the mothers, longtime friends, discussed ways to give back during Christmas. They decided to organise a small giveaway to support children spending the holidays in hospital.
The gifts included goody bags filled with Christmas candies, chocolates, bottled water, and other treats, distributed to a total of 62 children across three wards, 25 from each of two wards and an additional 12 from another ward.
The group includes working-class mothers, businesswomen, and others, but the initiative was spearheaded by the three friends.
Renet Vunua, one of the organisers, said their shared motivation and friendship inspired them to take action.
“We hope this initiative will continue to grow, allowing us to include more mothers in the future,” Vunua said.
The mothers described their effort as a first-of-its-kind initiative in Lae and encouraged other women to embrace the spirit of giving, particularly to children in hospitals.
A mother of one of the patients thanked the group, noting that while many people were celebrating Christmas outside, the children in the hospital were also able to feel the joy of the festive season thanks to their generosity.
