Governor Sia takes Christmas message of reform and hope to Bundaira inmates
Eastern Highlands Governor Simon Sia used Christmas Eve to deliver a blunt message of accountability, reform and second chances to inmates at the Bundaira Correctional Institution, reminding prisoners that jail time should mark a turning point and not the end of their lives.
Sia visited the Bundaira CIS facility outside Kainantu on December 24, donating food and essential items to inmates who will spend Christmas behind bars.
Speaking to inmates, he acknowledged the emotional weight of incarceration during the festive season, describing it as a painful reminder of lost freedom and separation from family.
“Christmas is about sharing moments with loved ones,” Sia said. “Being here at this time is tough, but it should also be a time to reflect on the choices that brought you here."
The Governor challenged inmates, many of them young men, to take responsibility for their actions and prepare for reintegration into society.
“You may have committed a crime, but do not see yourself as hopeless or rejected,” Sia said. “The law may find you guilty today, but tomorrow you must come out as a different person."
The EHP governor urged inmates to apply for vocational training centres and tertiary institutions upon release, assuring them of his support in assisting with acceptance letters and pathways back into education.
He also appealed to Correctional Service officers to support rehabilitation by facilitating inmate applications to training institutions.
“I see many of you are youths. You still have a role to play in developing this country,” he said. “Come out prepared, disciplined, and ready to contribute."
Bundaira CIS Commanding Officer Superintendent Laka Gaoma thanked Sia for the visit, stating it as a sign of mature leadership.
“This may be your first visit to Bundaira, but you have supported inmates at Bihute Prison for many years,” Superintendent Gaoma said. “Your presence here shows leadership that recognises rehabilitation, not just punishment."
Governor Sia also donated K2,000 towards inmates’ sports competitions, with all donated items to be shared among the facility’s 106 male inmates.
