Shipping delays leave Lorengau freezers empty ahead of Christmas
Families in Lorengau, Manus have been left struggling to find basic protein supplies as the festive season kicks off, following a three-week meat shortage across the town’s major retail outlets.
Manus province’s three largest supermarkets in Papindo, Yangzin, and Splendid, have reported empty freezers for three weeks.
The shortage has caused significant concern for families attempting to prepare for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Store managers have attributed the empty shelves to significant logistical delays with Bismarck Shipping.
According to management, the disruption in the shipping schedule halted the regular supply of frozen goods and essential household items to the province.
Papindo’s butchery supervisor, Kale Kihou, said the growing tension among local shoppers was a concern.
“People have been coming in constantly asking when the freezers will be filled or when the ship will arrive," Kihou said. "They look worried and frustrated, but it is beyond our control."
The cargo vessel is expected to arrive at the wharf today.
According to Kihou, the necessary meat supplies and store goods, especially for Papindo supermarket, will be offloaded and dispatched to the shop immediately upon arrival.
Staff at the major outlets are on standby to restock shelves by this afternoon, racing against the clock to ensure residents can complete their holiday shopping before Christmas Day.
