As Buimo Correctional Institution continues to face food and water shortages, Lae Biscuit Company has stepped in with a major Christmas donation to support more than 1,000 inmates during the festive season.

A total of 1,080 inmates received early Christmas assistance through food donations containing 500 cartons of noodles, 652 cartons of snax buscuits and 100 cartons of pawa drinks from the company, providing timely relief to the prison’s struggling kitchen operations.

Correctional Service Inspector in charge over the weekend, Alex Spairong, said the donation was the largest received from Lae Biscuit Company this year and came at a critical time.

“CS Buimo is currently experiencing food and water shortages, and this assistance has arrived when we need it most, especially to sustain our breakfast meals,” Inspector Spairong said.

He acknowledged Lae Biscuit Company’s continued commitment to the institution and thanked non-government organisations and the Lae City Authority for their support, while appealing to other stakeholders to assist during this challenging period.

LBC sales and marketing coordinator, Glenda Waikulai, told NBC News the company considers inmates part of the wider community and that the donation reflects its commitment to social responsibility and compassion.

Lae Biscuit has supported Buimo Correctional Institution for many years, sustaining a strong partnership through ongoing community outreach efforts.

The Christmas donation sends a message of hope and care to inmates who may not receive family visits during the festive season, reminding them they are not forgotten.

The company says it hopes the support will ease immediate food challenges and encourage continued community involvement in supporting correctional institutions.
