Hela Governor Philip Undialu confirmed the departure of 60 outstanding Flexible Open Distance Education [FODE] students, 35 female and 25 males, selected for Parul University, India. Governor Undialu says this adds to the first 80+ students sent in 2024.

They rose to the top from over 800 FODE graduates this year, proving the power of determination and second chances. A further 230 students passed Grade 12 exams and await tertiary selections nationwide.

“You privileged 60 out of 800 have earned an opportunity that many only dreamed of. Please do not take it for granted. India offers knowledge and exposure, but it will test your discipline, focus, and character. Stay true to your purpose.

"Remember your roots and the struggles that shaped you. Carry Hela’s and PNG’s name with honor. "Return not just with qualifications, but as transformed young leaders, educated, disciplined, and ready to serve your people, your province, and your country," he said.

Education Services Director Ronny Angu thanked all partners who have supported the development and advancement of TVET and FODE programs in the province. In particular, he acknowledged the Hela Provincial Government, District Development Authorities, ExxonMobil, and the National Education FODE.

"Through your collective commitment and positive contributions, Hela Province took a bold step forward, graduating 53 students in 2020. By 2025, we proudly conducted two graduation ceremonies, graduating a total of 1,893 students.

"Today, 6,524 students are enrolled in our Hela FODE schools. "From this cohort, the top 180 students are currently pursuing higher education at Parul University. Rest have applied to other tertiary institutions," he said.

Mr Angu extended appreciation to the Prime Minister for the Government’s strong educational vision and for the decisive and visionary leadership of Governor Undialu.

Hela Education Services, in partnership with ExxonMobil and the Kokoda Track Foundation, is expanding the FODE program in Komo. This initiative will enroll over 100 students, with school fees fully sponsored by ExxonMobil and the Kokoda Track Foundation, while Hela Education Services will coordinate and facilitate the program moving forward.

An MoU will be signed soon to officiate the program.
