73 year old joins the clean up in Madang town
73- year- old Patricia Mapai braved the morning drizzles on Saturday, 8 November, to join other Madang Town residents in the monthly cleanathon.
Mrs Mapai from Kairuru Island in Wewak District, East Sepik Province, is a resident of Madang Town for close to 30 years and was happy to take part in the Madang Town Cleanathon program, joining her son, Desmond Mapai, who is the councilor for ward 3 in Madang Urban LLG.
Mrs Mapai said, " Madang Town used to be clean before, but no longer, and we all must participate in keeping the town clean. The governor, Ramsey Pariwa, must consider engaging all church denominations in this program. "
She added, "Why should we sing " Beautiful Madang " when the place is dirty?"
Further, she said, " Madang Town before was number one in terms of cleanliness. People of Madang took pride in their town and kept it clean, and we must do the same now. "
She emphasised that people must learn how to look after their own rubbish when in town.
Cleanathon supervisor Eugene Wanai thanked Mrs Mapai for her eagerness to participate in the cleanathon despite her age.
He re- emphasized that keeping Madang Town is everyone's business.
Wanai said the final cleanathon for 2025 will be held next month.
The Keep Madang Town Clean campaign is a concerted effort between Madang Urban LLG, business houses, educational institutions, the police prosecution unit, the local people, and the general public.
