Classes at the University of Goroka [UOG] have been suspended indefinitely following violent clashes between students and members of the local community over the weekend.

Vice Chancellor Dr Teng Waninga confirmed the decision yesterday, saying it followed a full consultation by the University Council and Academic Board.

“Stakeholders are concerned… we are supported by many people,” Dr Waninga said. “When decisions are made, not everyone will agree but this decision was made in the best interest of student safety and academic integrity.”

Dr Waninga said about 75 per cent of students have completed their exams and assessments, while the remaining 25 per cent will be allowed to sit their outstanding tests online between November 24 and 29.

He told students that the academic year is effectively over, and advised all continuing students to return home and complete any pending work remotely.

Meanwhile, Acting Prime Minister and Lae MP John Rosso says police-escorted buses are travelling to Goroka today to evacuate stranded students.

Rosso said the Morobe Provincial Government has opened its doors to assist those who feel unsafe, offering Lae as a temporary transit hub for students returning to their home provinces.

He confirmed that free accommodation and meals have been arranged at Bugandi and Lae Secondary Schools, where students will stay while waiting for their respective provincial governments to organize repatriation.

“Morobe stands ready to help students from across the country until it is safe for them to return home,” Rosso said.

The closure of UOG is one of the most serious disruptions to the academic year in recent times, with authorities emphasizing that student safety remains the top priority as tensions continue in Goroka.
