Busu Secondary School has opened a new gymnastics facility to promote health, fitness, and student wellbeing, in what is believed to be the first of its kind for a public school in Papua New Guinea.

The new building, opened yesterday in Lae, was converted from an abandoned female ablution block into a 15-space gym designed for physical education and sporting programs.

Principal George Noble said the project is part of the school’s ten-year development plan and was initiated by the Student Representative Council [SRC].

“Busu is taking physical education to a whole new level, setting the pace for other schools in the country to follow,” Noble said.

He said the facility will primarily benefit students’ health and fitness, but could also generate income for the school through community use.

Provincial Program Advisor for Education Keith Tangui praised the school’s initiative and urged students to make the most of the opportunity.

“This is the first public school to have a facility like this. It will help students stay fit, focused, and ready to learn,” Tangui said.

Former principal and Morobe Senior School Inspector Gibson Dom also congratulated the school, describing the project as a milestone for sports development.

“Busu has a strong record of producing athletes. This facility will elevate those efforts and inspire others,” Dom said.

He called on students and stakeholders to take ownership of the facility and ensure it is properly maintained.

The new gymnastics centre is part of Busu Secondary’s broader plan to combine academic achievement with physical development and community engagement.
