Hela governor commends peaceful and successful LLG elections
Hela Governor Philip Undialu has praised the people of Hela Province for conducting a free, fair, and safe Local-Level Government (LLG) election, demonstrating unity, maturity, and respect for democratic processes.
He confirmed that elections in Tari-Pori, Komo-Hulia, and Margarima electorates have been successfully completed, while Koroba-Lake Kopiago will go for polling over the weekend and will complete the remaining polling and counting next week.
He confirmed that around 90% of counting and declarations are expected to be finalized this weekend.
Governor Undialu extended his deep appreciation to Provincial Election Manager Mr. John Tipa and his team, Provincial Administrator Mr. Marago Daguba, PPC Michael Welly, MS09 Commander Mairi Arau and their troops, the PNG Defence Force Command, and all public servants and election officials who ensured the smooth conduct of the elections despite logistical and security challenges.
He also acknowledged the enormous contributions from the four District Development Authorities (DDAs), Tari-Pori, Komo-Hulia, Koroba-Lake Kopiago, and Margarima commending their MPs and DDA Chief Executive Officers for providing leadership, financial support, and hands-on assistance at every stage of the process.
“Even in areas previously affected by tribal conflicts, candidates and communities came together to allow peaceful polling. This shows a new level of maturity and unity among our people,” Governor Undialu said.
The Governor urged the PNG Electoral Commission (PNGEC) and the Department of Provincial and Local Government Affairs (DPLGA) to fast-track the final declarations and swearing-in of LLG presidents, noting that prolonged delays can create political uncertainty and unnecessary expenses through extended political camps.
He offered early congratulations to all elected councilors and presidents, expressing his eagerness to work closely with them to deliver essential services and advance development priorities for Hela.
He also had a special message for those who were not elected:
“You remain leaders chosen by your communities. Only one person is elected to represent each ward, but every candidate is a leader in their own right. I encourage you to continue providing leadership and contributing to peace and development in your areas.”
He acknowledged the people of Hela for proving critics wrong and showing the nation, that Hela can deliver a peaceful, credible, and successful election.
“This election has restored confidence in our province and our people.
Together, we have shown that peace, respect, and good leadership are always overshadowed by isolated minor incidents, but this time we did well,” he said.
