Bird commits K20,000 to boost local cocoa cooperative in East Sepik
The Yekere Cooperative Society has received a major boost from East Sepik governor Allan Bird with a K20,000 funding commitment.
The cooperative made up of more than 20 local cocoa farmers from Yangoru-Saussia District, have welcomed the support to enhance operations and development.
The announcement was made by Mathew Wak, a representative from the Governor’s office, during the Mini Cocoa Cupping Show held in Bamuru Village, East Yangoru. The two-day event, initiated by the Yekere Cocoa Corporative Society, was supported by the PNG Cocoa Board and the European Union-funded PNG STREIT Program.
Wak commended the efforts of the Yekere Cooperative and all cocoa farmers across the Greater Sepik Region, stating, “Without you all, this event would not be fruitful.” He also acknowledged PNG Cocoa Board and the EU STREIT PNG Program for their continued support in strengthening the local cocoa industry.
Most notably, Wak conveyed governor Bird’s gratitude to the international buyers from the United Kingdom who attended the show, recognizing their presence as a key step towards connecting Sepik cocoa to global markets.
Wak further announced that the cheque for K20,000 is currently being processed, and once ready, it will be formally presented to the Cooperative’s Chairman Wilson Yaninen.
This support marks a significant milestone for the cooperative and reflects the governor’s commitment to empowering rural communities through agriculture and sustainable development.
