The Madang Provincial Health Authority [MaPHA] says it is ready to support the provincial government in improving health services and meeting key health priorities.

MaPHA Chief Executive Officer Dr Martin Daimen announced the official opening of the new children’s ward at Madang Provincial Hospital on Friday.

Dr Daimen said, "We stand ready to work with you to fulfil the priorities, especially in health in Madang Province. We want to bring services closer to where the majority of the people live in the rural areas."

The rural population in Madang Province which constitutes more than 75 per cent is now the focus of the MaPHA.

"Our focus now is rural-based. We must bring the services to them. Though we can improve the services here at the provincial hospital, we must go to them," Dr Daimen added.

Under MaPHA's new theme, "Walking together, Reaching the unreached and Leaving no one behind," Dr Daimen is confident Madang Province can make a turnaround with its health indicators, which in recent years have been on the decline.

Meanwhile, commenting on Friday's opening of the new children's ward, Dr Daimen described it as a significant achievement for the people of Madang, especially the children.

"Although it's very small, it is significant. It will go a long way to serve the people of Madang, especially our children, who are very vulnerable to all kinds of diseases and sicknesses. They can have a place where they can come and rest with very good beds that are comfortable and doctors can attend to them," said Dr Daimen.

On behalf of the MaPHA Board, the management, the staff, and the people of Madang, he thanked Madang Governor Ramsey Pariwa for making it possible for the old burnt- downward to be rebuilt after four years.

The old building was gutted by fire in 2021.

He also extended appreciation to the Ramu Nickel Project for providing financial assistance towards the construction of the new ward.

The new ward has been fitted with standard hospital beds.
