Divine Word University holds annual missioning ceremony for final year students

Divine Word University (DWU) yesterday held its annual Missioning Celebration, commissioning final year students with the symbolic “Missioning Cross” as they prepare to enter the workforce and serve their communities and nation.
The ceremony, officially opened by DWU President Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs reminded students that their education at DWU is not only about academic achievement but also about becoming individuals of value.
“Dear students, the education you have received at DWU is not just about academic success, but about becoming people who can make a positive difference in society. Today, we affirm that your time with us has shaped you into individuals who will contribute meaningfully, both personally and in the broader community,” Professor Gibbs said.
He encouraged students to embrace the responsibilities and opportunities ahead as they step into adulthood.
“Some of you are excited to celebrate this milestone with your families and friends. Others may feel a mix of emotions, which is natural when embarking on a new journey. Remember, learning from life experience is a lifelong journey,” he added.
Professor Gibbs emphasized that the missioning ceremony signifies more than academic accomplishment.
“This ceremony is a declaration of your readiness to face life’s challenges with courage, wisdom, and purpose. The holistic education you’ve received at DWU equips you not only intellectually but also spiritually, with Christian values that will guide you as responsible citizens. The cross you will receive today symbolizes God’s guidance as you make wise and ethical decisions,” he said.
The keynote address was delivered by Reverend Kario Veneo of the Foursquare Gospel Lighthouse Church, who praised Madang for hosting one of the best celebrations in the country.
He urged students to take meaningful actions for a better future.
“We can do something today for a better tomorrow. Today, we are all standing on the threshold of building a better tomorrow," Rev. Veneo said.
The annual Missioning Celebration is a key event in DWU’s calendar, marking the transition of students from academic life to professional and community service roles.
