PM visits Enga, unveils historic plaque and urges an end to tribal fights

Prime Minister James Marape visited Enga Province recently, accompanied by Finance Minister Thomas Opa, Police and Internal Security Minister Peter Tsimalili Junior, and MRDC Managing Director Augustine Mano.

During a low key ceremony at the Takeanda Museum, the Prime Minister unveiled a plaque recognizing Enga’s contributions to the nation.

The event was attended by Governor Sir Peter Ipatas, Provincial Assembly members, and public servants. Marape highlighted the province’s role in developing human resources, education, and the national economy through the Pogera Gold Mine.

The visit also coincided with the Provincial Day and the deferred 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

Speaking during the visit, Mr Marape commended Governor Sir Peter Ipatas for his long standing leadership.

He praised Sir Peter’s efforts in promoting human resource development, strengthening national institutions, and working to end tribal conflicts in the province.

Marape said it is important to give the veteran leader the recognition he deserves, while also urging the people of Enga to contribute to nation building as the country celebrates 50 years of independence.

The Prime Minister also called on local leaders, businesspeople, and educated elites to stop funding tribal fights. He warned that using towns and cities to fuel conflicts only results in the loss of lives and property.

In a further announcement, Mr Marape revealed K8 million in national government funding to complete the Mukurumanda Correctional Institute, which will house convicts.

He assured the people of Enga that the government will continue to support initiatives to eradicate tribal fighting and promote peace in the province.
