The National Agriculture Quarantine and Inspection Authority [NAQIA] has dispatched an investigation team to the Tairora Valley in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands, following reports of mysterious pig deaths.

NAQIA Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Ilagi Puana told NBC News that preliminary assessments suggest the deaths may be linked to African Swine Fever [ASF], though other diseases can produce similar symptoms.

The team from Lae will use rapid test kits to confirm the cause, with an official update expected in their next report.

"If tests confirm African Swine Fever, NAQIA will activate its animal health emergency response plan, similar to the response during the Upper Highlands outbreak,” Dr Puana said.

African Swine Fever is a highly contagious viral disease that affects pigs and can have serious economic impacts on local farming communities if outbreaks are not contained.
