3rd Climate Change Summit to commence tomorrow

Tuesday, 30 September 2025, 12:50 pm

The 3rd Climate Change Summit begins tomorrow, with key sectors presenting progress on climate action targets.

Climate Change and Development Authority [CCDA] Acting Managing Director Debra Sungi says a total of 10 sectors will give implementation updates based on climate actions discussed during the 2nd Climate Change Summit in 2023.

These sectors include Forestry and Land Use (REDD+), Agriculture, Energy, Infrastructure and Transport, Health, Fisheries and Marine Ecosystem, Tourism, Biodiversity Conservation, and Mineral Governance and Policy.

Ms Sungi says CCDA coordinates with these sectors to ensure they effectively implement climate change mitigation and adaptation actions.

“We are a coordinating agency. Implementers are actually those sectors. So those sectors are going to be providing to us the update of their key targets that we have outlined in our NDCs, how much progress that they have made, and they will tell us the story of what have been achieved in terms of our policies that we have set in place such as the National Climate compatible development policy.” Ms Sungi said.

Ms Sungi recalls that during the 2nd Climate Change Summit in 2023, participants discussed climate actions aligned with the National Adaptation Plan, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the Climate Change Management Act, and Vision 2050.

She says that these actions and targets align well with the country’s adaptation and mitigation plans.

Meanwhile, Minister for Environment, Conservation and Climate Change, Simo Kilepa, says the summit’s significance and urged all sectors to participate actively.

He also extended his appreciation to sponsors for their continuous support throughout the past two summits and the upcoming one.

The summit will officially begin tomorrow and conclude on Thursday. Ahead of the formal opening, students will perform a pre-summit event today at the Sir John Guise Stadium.
