New Wau Waria district office to be named after late Deputy Prime Minister Sam Basil

The new Wau Waria district administration building in Garaina Station will be named in honor of the late Deputy Prime Minister and Bulolo MP, Sam Basil, who died in a tragic accident in 2022.
Wau Waria MP Marsh Narewec made the announcement during a recent address, stating the dedication is a tribute to Basil’s instrumental role in the creation of the district.
“Bulolo was a large and challenging district to manage. The late Sam Basil worked tirelessly to push for road development and recognized the need to split the district in two,” Narewec said. “It was a wise and visionary decision, and naming the new district office after him is the least we can do to honor his legacy.”

The newly formed Wau Waria district was officially established following the administrative split from Bulolo, a move that Basil had long advocated for prior to his passing.
Narewec added that the construction of the new building marks a significant milestone for the district, and emphasized the importance of extending the Morobe–Northern Highway to Garaina Station, where the office will be based.
“All administrative affairs will soon be conducted from the new facility once it’s completed,” he said.
The current administration office in Garaina has been neglected for decades, with little investment since Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975.
