West Sepik police honor families, celebrate service at special gathering

Police in West Sepik Province have held a family gathering to honor the sacrifices of officers’ families and to recognize service during recent major operations, including the Aitape Lumi by-election and the country’s 50th Independence Golden Jubilee.
The event, hosted last week under Acting Provincial Police Commander Senior Inspector Silas Kuainou, was the first of its kind and aimed to strengthen ties between officers, their families, and the wider community.
“The safety of our people depends on the performance of our police officers,” Kuainou told the gathering. “By working hard and earning the trust of our communities, we can build a peaceful province for all to live in.”

As part of the ceremony, Kuainou presented ‘Good Work Notices’ to officers recognized for exceptional performance. The commendations will be kept on official record and could support future promotions or disciplinary considerations.
Provincial Electoral Manager Sarlote Kai, who attended alongside Aitape Lumi Acting District Administrator Job Tomur, praised the force for its professionalism. She also presented awards and brought a cake to thank officers for ensuring security during the by-election.
The day ended with police, their families, and guests sharing food and fellowship, a moment Kuainou said symbolized the unity needed to keep West Sepik safe.
